Join us on Tuesday, February 13 for a presentation by Lt. Colonel Shannon Hellenbrand, Wisconsin Army National Guard Recruiting & Retention Commander. 

Lt. Colonel Hellenbrand will share some experiences from her 25-year career in the Army National Guard. She will share her perspective as a female leader in predominantly male career fields, and in particular, she will discuss efforts to promote gender equity, inclusion, readiness and safety for female Soldiers. 

About Lt. Colonel Shannon Hellenbrand: 

Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Shannon Hellenbrand enlisted into the Wisconsin Army National Guard (WIARNG) in 1999. She became an Engineer Officer upon her graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) in 2003. She majored in Sociology, Political Science and Women's Studies.

She began her active duty career in the Wisconsin Army National Guard in 2005 and is in her 25th year of military service. She is Engineer, Logistics, Human Resources and Recruiting qualified. She directed human resources, led talent management efforts and helped shape culture and strategy.

LTC Hellenbrand has deployed twice to Iraq: First in 2004-2005, as an engineer platoon leader, where she and her team built outposts, airfields, helipads and check-points and enhanced perimeter and entrance security for Coalition forces. The second in 2009-2010, she served as an engineer company commander and detention facility commander. There, her unit was assigned a detainee operations mission, where they were responsible for running a prison with 500 Iraqi detainees.

LTC Hellenbrand serves as the Commander of the WI Guard’s Recruiting & Retention Battalion, headquartered in Madison, with hundreds of Soldiers and recruits assigned across the state, in 65 communities.

She is the WI Guard’s Diversity Advisory Team leader and led a grassroots effort to promote gender equity and support to pregnant and postpartum Soldiers, which is now an established program in the state. She is the sole National Guard officer on the Army Women’s Initiative Team.

LTC Hellenbrand has a master's degree in Human Resources and Employee Relations from Penn State. Shannon, her husband, Jeremiah, and daughter Tenley (5), reside in Sun Prairie.

  2. Vegetarian Entrée: Orzo Stuffed Acorn Squash. Squash cream, candied pecans, baby spinach, grilled radicchio, herb oil
