Join us in-person or virtually on Tuesday, August 9 as Lori Lopez, Professor of Communication Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, discusses Hmong women and media entrepreneurship. Based on 6 years of fieldwork in Hmong American communities in Wisconsin, this research presentation explores the unique opportunities and challenges facing Hmong American media entrepreneurs and the innovative forms of media Hmong women have developed as refugees, immigrants, and American citizens.

About Lori Lopez:

Dr. Lori Kido Lopez is Professor of Communication Arts and Director of the Asian American Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  She has published many books, including Asian American Media Activism: Fighting for Cultural Citizenship and Micro Media Industries: Hmong American Media Innovation in the Diaspora. Her research examines the way that minority groups use media in the fight for social justice, particularly focusing on Asian American communities and media cultures.

Attendance Options:

Lori Lopez will be appearing in-person at the Madison Club. Members can choose between attending in person or virtually. Guests are welcome to attend in person or virtually. 

In Person Luncheon Choices for August:

Regular Entree: Watermelon and Heirloom tomato salad with Mozzarella, fresh basil, citrus-mint emulsion, cucumber, blackened ahi tuna

Vegetarian Entree: Vegetable Summer CurryGarlic scape chutney, steamed jasmine rice, sweet potato chip

If you plan to attend in-person, you must register by Wednesday, August 3. 

Virtually

The livestream will begin when the program starts, shortly after 12:00 p.m. 

TEMPO Madison COVID Safety Policy:

All attendees must provide photo ID and proof of either:

1) COVID vaccination, or

2) A negative COVID test result taken within 72 hours of the event.

Cancellation Policy 

Due to the commitment for products and services that TEMPO Madison must make, no refunds will be given for cancellations that occur 7 days or fewer before the luncheon date. Members who cannot attend the monthly luncheon in-person have the option to use a free livestream of the event.
