February 2019 TEMPO Luncheon

Please join us, Tuesday, February 19, 2019 to hear Steve Ackerman and Jonathan Martin present Ask the Weather Guys: What Does Our Weather Say About Climate Change?

Please plan to meet at The Madison Club at 11:30 am for networking; lunch will be served at noon.

Steve and Jonathan are professors in the UW-Madison Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. Known as “The Weather Guys”, they are regular guests on Wisconsin Public Radio on the last Monday of each month. They also author the monthly column “Ask the Weather Guys” for the Wisconsin State Journal.

What does our weather say about climate change? When its colder than usual during a Wisconsin winter, does that mean global warming is not occurring? Why did we see such devastating flooding in Wisconsin last year and should we expect more? What does climate change mean for Wisconsin? We’ll ask “The Weather Guys” to give us the facts about climate change, update us on the latest research, and weigh in on whether or not it is too late to make a difference.

Jonathan Martin

Professor Jonathan Martin joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994 after completing his Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington. He has received several excellence in teaching awards, and was named by the Princeton Review as one of the nation’s Top 300 Professors in 2014. His research expertise is in mid-latitude weather systems and he has authored over 50 scientific papers, as well as the leading textbook on mid-latitude atmospheric dynamics. He recently ended a 9-year term as Chair of the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at UW-Madison.

Steve Ackerman

Steve Ackerman completed his Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences at Colorado State University in 1987. He is a professor of atmospheric and oceanic sciences and the Director of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies. He is the author of “Meteorology: Understanding the Atmosphere” and numerous research papers. He has received the American Meteorological Society Award for Excellence in Teaching (2009) and the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award (in 1999). He is expert in satellite meteorology, the study of weather using satellite observations, a field that UW-Madison helped originate. He, along with Jonathan Martin, is a part of the two-man team called “The Weather Guys” who appear monthly on Wisconsin Public Radio and write a monthly column for the Wisconsin State Journal.
